Students from Kent schools won prestigious awards at a regional science fair.

Students from Dartford Science and Technology College, Heath Lane, won the Elekta Award for Science at the Big Bag South East fair with their project “Testing Alternative Fuels.” Kristina Cogswell, Chloe Ford, Katie Smith and Rebecca Steel were presented with their award by Professor Andrew Lloyd, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Brighton. Judges at fair, which was held at the South of England Showground, praised the students’ “lovely experimental procedure,” adding that it was “good to see enthusiasm for practical work.”

Emma Willett, who attends Astor College, Dover, impressed the judges with her project “Space Weather and its Impacts on Earth,” and won the Senior Science/Maths category of the regional National Science + Engineering Competition (NSEC). She will now represent the South East in the NSEC national finals in 2015. The award was presented by Mark Collins, Senior Vice-President of sponsors CGG. Judges at fair, described Emma as “an amazing presenter, a potential star of the future,” and said her project was the basis for future research.

Zen Collins and Kirsty Taylor, from The Rochester Grammar School, impressed with their project “Bubbles!” and won the Crawley Borough Council Prize for Creativity. They were presented with their award by Councillor David Shreeves. Judges at fair praised the students’ creative and innovative skills and the high quality of their presentations.

The Big Bang South East, which is the biggest event of its kind in the region and was this year attended by over 4,000 nine to 19-year-olds, The event was organised by STEM Sussex, the outreach support department of the University of Brighton, in partnership with Crawley Borough Council and Central Sussex College. STEM Ambassadors attended the event to support with workshops as well as judge competition categories.
