Cosmetic Chemistry at Wilmington Academy

 July 07 2016 | Kent & Medway | Views: 2191

This event was organised by Wilmington Academy for their prospective sixth form students. There were approximately 50 students who took part, split into two groups with a morning and afternoon session.

The aim of today was for each group of 5 to create a business selling; bath bombs, soap or lip balms. They had a budget, and were briefed on the costs of packaging, marketing and materials. 50 minutes was allocated to each section; planning, production and marketing.

Hellen Ward director of Kent & Medway STEM demonstrated to one member of each group how to manufacture each product, and advised to all on what key roles they should play in order to get the best result.

The students put a lot of thought into each part of the project and it really came through when they had to present their business idea at the end.

STEM Ambassadors attended as it was a ‘Dragons Den’ style day, so they acted as judges. Taking notes throughout, especially keeping an eye on teamwork and cleanliness! Then at the end coming together with the teachers to decide on an overall winning team, to be awarded with a £10 book voucher.

Some of the student’s feedback included :

  • ‘It was very good and fun, I enjoyed the session and learnt new skills’
  • ‘It inspires you to be creative’
  • ‘It was interesting, challenging and enjoyable’

STEM Ambassadors feedback :

  • ‘The students engaged well and developed life and communication skills’
  • ‘The students took it very seriously and all worked very hard in different ways to create a product to present at the end’

Each group got randomly selected to go up and present their product, which was in packaging that they had designed and created, featuring their brand name and relevant information. The group went on to inform on how they used their budget, who their target audience was, how they planned to advertise it and answered questions from judges, including how they thought they worked as a team.

Overall it was a very successful day with a huge amount of colourful, creative bath bombs, soaps and lip balms created and everyone worked very well together especially as for some they had never spent time together before.
