On Tuesday 11th July 2017, Mr Phil Moffitt, a STEM Ambassador came to talk to 15 Year 10 students at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Faversham about his career in engineering.

This provided the students extensive knowledge into the engineering and the different types of engineering there is from mechanical, aerospace to biomedical. Phil provided interactive hands-on activities to see how fun and exciting engineering can be from building their own torches to motorised ball machine.

He gave these inquisitive minds a lot to think about, and by the end of the day, some students were seriously considering going into some form of engineering as a career.

The schools KS3 & KS4 Support, Work Experience Co-ordinator, Mrs B Randall noted “it was good to hear about the diversity within engineering and the alternative routes into finding a suitable pathway, be it an apprenticeship or university. They were excited to be actually making something that they could see working”.

The students from the day included:

  • “I learnt that there are many different types of engineer and that if you enjoy taking things apart to see how they work you would probably enjoy engineering.”
  • “We made a ping pong ball propel through the air using a battery and two rotating wheels, it was a lot of fun. I think I might consider engineering as a career.”
  • “I’d like to get involved in Aerospace and discovered that engineering plays a big part in that.”
