STEM Challenge Day Success

 July 22 2013 | Kent & Medway | Views: 1772

Students at Mayfield Grammar School for Girls, Saint Georges Church of England School, Hugh Christie Technology College (photographed) and St John’s Catholic Comprehensive School all collapsed the school curriculum at the end of 2013’s Summer term to enjoy interactive STEM Challenge Days supported by Kent & Medway STEM Ambassadors.

The pupils have had their team work skills tested in various challenges including building trebuchets from K’nex, working on giant floor puzzles and dry skis. The days have also involved STEM Careers information. All of the activities have been supported by Kent & Medway STEM Ambassadors working in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths.

Feedback from Teachers and Students:

“The STEM Challenge day and STEM Ambassador support had a positive impact on my capacity to enrich the pupils learning by encouraging the students to take more control of their own learning” Teacher, Saint Georges Church of England School

“The teachers enjoyed the STEM tasks too - especially the team building ones in the afternoon. Many students were engaged and surrounded the STEM Ambassador after the event to talk more about not knowing engineers did more than fix things!” Teacher, Saint Georges Church of England School

“Going into a career of STEM seems a lot more appealing”
Student, Mayfield Grammar School for Girls

“The STEM ambassadors were very good and clear on explaining.” Student, Hugh Christie Technology College

“It was a really fun and challenging day. Making the crane was really good.” Student, St John’s Catholic Comprehensive

Spires Academy, Towers School, Norton Knatchbull School, John Wallis Academy, and Wilmington School for Boys are all set to do the same over September and October this term. These events have been organised and supported after a twilight training session Kent & Medway STEM offered to teachers in May 2013. If you are a teacher and you would like to attend similar training events please contact kentandmedwaystem@canterbury.ac.uk or check Events page.
