STEM Challenge Day at Norton Knatchbull School

Kent & Medway STEM Ambassador Philip Lenard introduced STEM to years 9, 10 and 12 at Norton Knatchbull School on Wednesday 25th September 2013. Philip started by explaining his career in STEM as an electro-mechanical engineer to years 9 and 10. The pupils were then put into groups and tasked with imagining STEM jobs which do not exist yet - the results were both scientifically accurate as well as outrageous.

For the year 12’s the first activity was one which required a certain element of patience- laying on as few balloons as possible without bursting them. The second activity introduced teamwork to the equation, given a large plastic mat, each team had to stand on their own mat, and they were not allowed to touch the floor. The task was to half the size of the mat without any member of the team touching outside the mat, and then they had to half it again!

Strategy was the key in this activity and nearly all the teams showed this. The students enjoyed the day and many remarked that they were more aware of STEM careers and where studying STEM in further education may be able to take them.
