On 8th February 2011 staff from Joy Lane Primary School, Gravesend Grammar School, Oakwood Park Grammar School, Canterbury College and Mid Kent College along with a range of STEM Ambassadors took part in the Kent SEPnet Astrodome Professional Development Opportunity.

Staff and Ambassadors were provided with a practical guide on astronomy and telescopes which could be used with students of all ages, and learnt how the astrodome can be used with the students that they teach.

They were shown the Astrodome, which is a 5 metre planetarium with a Panasonic high definition LCD projector which projects onto a hemispherical mirror, creating projections around the walls of the dome. Up to 30 school children can use this at any one time, and the content of the show can be tailored to be age appropriate. Participants on the day were shown “The Night Sky” planetarium talk which gave them an overview of the basic conceptsof stars and astronomy. This is just one of the shows that the astrodome can be used to show.
